Dennis V. Lavrov Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution Conference 2016

Dennis V. Lavrov

Dennis Lavrov is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology at Iowa State University. Dr. Lavrov received his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Michigan working with Dr. Wesley Brown. He was a CIHR Postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Franz Lang group at the Université de Montréal. Dr. Lavrov’s main interests are animal evolution, molecular phylogenetics, and mitochondrial biology. His research is focused on three groups of non-bilaterian animals: Porifera (sponges), Cnidaria (corals, jellyfishes), and Ctenophora (comb jellies). From a phylogenetic perspective each of these groups forms at least an equal-status taxon to all bilaterian animal (from flatworms to humans) and is expected to harbor a large portion of animal genomic diversity that we are only now beginning to explore.
